My Meadowview LLC’s Samraat held off the likes of rival Uncle Sigh and In Trouble to take the $500,000 Gotham Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct Saturday. Sent off as the 2-1 favorite, Samraat trailed both In Trouble and Uncle Sigh throughout the first six furlongs until jockey Jose Ortiz called on the Rick Violette, Jr.-trained Samraat and he took the lead in the stretch. He crossed the wire ahead by a neck with Uncle Sigh second and In Trouble third. Financial Mogul finished fourth.
The final time for the 1 1/16-mile, fast-dirt contest was 1:44.44. Samraat earned 50 points on the Road to #KYD14, boosting his total to 60 points to take the overall lead in the standings. Uncle Sigh now moves to a tie with Albano in fourth-place with 24 points overall. In Trouble joins eight others tied with 10 total points and Financial Mogul is tied with five others who have five overall points.
Samraat has now won all five of his five total starts and earned $583,200.
“This is a real horse now,” trainer Rick Violette told the BloodHorse. “We knew he had a shot to be a real horse after the Withers; he proved he is a real horse today.”
“He has a lot of heart,” Ortiz said. “In the stretch when I showed him the whip a little bit, he was lugging in, but he never made contact with other horses. I just hand rode him and he responded very good, and I tried to keep him straight. He runs good when he’s in the front, but I rated him the last two times and he responded and passed horses and kept running. That’s a nice horse. I think he’s going to handle (additional distance) very good.”
